Synopsis
What happens when a balloon takes flight? Everyone looks up at the sky, a few children cry, but there’s nothing more to be done. But what if this balloon had slipped from the hands of two clowns? Two aviators, hot-air balloon pilots – fearless and brave – set off on a journey to chase after it. This journey will take them to Balloonia, where dreams that have slipped from our grasp gather,
those that have burst and those that have now gone flat. Will they manage to bring them back down to earth?
A bittersweet show with a narrative that remains light, ethereal and dreamlike. Poetic without losing its humour, humorous without losing its poetry. What does it mean to chase a dream, if not to live? The show aims to be a hymn to
life, a hymn to the journey – or rather, ‘to the very reason for the journey: traveling.
A production selected by Shanghai Yijun Cultural Performing Arts for the Grand Theatre Tour 2019
The show was created in 2018 and, following its debut at the Teatro Rosetum, immediately embarked on a tour of almost 30 performances in major theatres across China, organised by the Chinese entertainment agency Shanghai Yijun Cultural Performing Arts, with whom the company
has been collaborating for two years.
Through the use and manipulation of balloons, the actors create images and sensations designed to advance the narrative; a narrative that aims to remain light,
ethereal and dreamlike, whilst always retaining a sense of humour.
The two characters draw inspiration from silent film (Lalapup and Olio in particular), the indefinable nature of the circus clowns of yesteryear (Charlie Rivel in particular) and animated films (Dick Dastardly and Zilly).
The show features a variety of techniques, including balloon manipulation, juggling, balloon spinning, the ‘man in the balloon’ act, and pantomime.
