Synopsis
A white square, an empty room. Two girls dressed in light colours, lying down, seem to be asleep. A music box will wake them, bringing their bodies to life. The morning dance begins and, as every day, the two girls look into a mirror to rediscover themselves after the oblivion of sleep. And it is this mirror – imagined and drawn in the air – that will project them elsewhere. And just as in Alice in Wonderland, the protagonists find themselves in an upside-down world, in a room of memory that is the room of time, to rediscover their sense of self through the exploration of the senses. In this way, they rediscover their ‘first times’ and piece together the fabric of their lived experiences. The experience of remembering is not the same for both of them. One of them is less inclined towards detail, recalling the general picture, whilst the other remembers the specifics; she is meticulous. The first memory to emerge in the room is the experience of ‘the first time I was alone’. Then the two characters see one another, mirroring each other, recognizing themselves in their resemblance, and burst into the dance of ‘the first time I was born’.
This scene leads the two girls to the edge of the white square at the far end of the room, as they try to understand why they find themselves in that very place from their memory. It is their playing together that sets the scene for what follows. The girls are searching for a shared memory – a party, perhaps. But where was the sofa? When did their aunt arrive? That fragment of memory shows them together, close to one another for the first time. From this encounter springs a whirlwind of ‘first times’ that surface in the young women’s minds. Something, however, breaks during this game. Yet in the end, after this shared experience—made up of encounters and clashes—empowered by their memories, confident in their quest, and satisfied with the emotional journey they have undertaken, they can cross the threshold, the boundary of the room of memory, to arrive in the present, reaching out towards the future until they almost touch the moon.
